Trimble PX-1 RTX powers precise BVLOS drone delivery for Volatus Aerospace

Volatus Aerospace is working with Trimble to pioneer safe, precise Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone deliveries within highly regulated airspace.

Operating a commercial drone delivery service out of Canada’s Edmonton International Airport presents immense technical and safety hurdles, as the aircraft must navigate tight flight corridors, strict altitude limits, and heavy magnetic interference from airport infrastructure. To meet Nav Canada’s rigid compliance and safety guidelines, Volatus required a robust positioning solution capable of absolute accuracy and reliability where traditional GPS systems fall short.

To overcome these obstacles, Volatus integrated the Trimble PX-1 RTX solution, a compact GNSS-inertial board paired with CenterPoint RTX correction services, directly into their drone platforms. This advanced hardware and software combination delivers real-time, centimeter-level positioning and highly precise inertial-derived true heading measurements. It also reduces operational risks associated with poor sensor performance or magnetic interference by providing enhanced positioning redundancy. By providing consistent spatial awareness, Trimble’s technology successfully allows Volatus to maintain precise altitude and corridor compliance, setting a new benchmark for autonomous cargo logistics seamlessly co-existing with commercial aviation.
