No signal, no excuse: How businesses stay operational when GPS goes dark

GPS has become an invisible foundation for most companies.

It runs logistics processes, provides telecommunications services, and makes transportation networks more efficient. Because it works so well together, no one seems to doubt its abilities.

Until it fails.

With growing numbers of GPS-related interference, jamming and spoofing attacks around the world, businesses are now faced with the reality that their reliance on GPS is no longer a certainty. The repercussions of its malfunction can be far-reaching.

The Hidden Dependency on GPS

GPS technology is often associated with maps and directions, but its role in modern business runs much deeper. It supports: 

  • Fleet tracking and route optimization 
  • Visibility and coordination in the supply chain
  • Synchronization of telecommunications networks
  • Financial systems that need precise time-stamping
  • Monitoring and control of the energy grid. 

These functions are often programmed using GPS signals as the main source of information, and sometimes there isn’t even a backup plan in place.

This results in a major security loophole.

In the event that the GPS signal is interfered with, it does not affect just one function alone, but several different levels of operations at once.

When GPS Goes Dark

GPS disruption can take several forms.

While jamming causes the signal to disappear entirely, thus depriving the process of position and timing data, spoofing results in fake information input and creates an illusion of normal functioning. Both attacks are dangerous, yet in a distinct way.

The first attack can easily be detected because the system fails or alerts its operators. The second, meanwhile, can remain unnoticed for quite some time and result in mistakes in critical processes. This difference is vital when it comes to business operations.

A Real-World Wake-Up Call

Some recent disruptions in GNSS usage have revealed the effect that GPS disruption can have on commercial activities other than aviation and defense. In particular, from 2024 to 2026, there were numerous reports of disturbances to GNSS throughout some regions in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

In addition to the effects experienced by the aviation industry, these disruptions also affected transportation, logistics, and other aspects of business where accurate time is critical. According to EASA and industry groups, such disruptions were common enough to cause an interruption to operations and require companies to resort to alternative procedures.

It became clear that GPS disruption is an issue that concerns multiple industries, not just aviation.

From Efficiency to Resilience

For a long time, GPS has been used by businesses to optimize their operations because it enables them to reduce costs, increase accuracy, and save time.

This is no longer the case today.

Apart from optimizing operations, businesses must be prepared to keep working in spite of any potential difficulties with GPS and must therefore design processes that will be able to function despite such difficulties.

Resilience means continuing operations despite the risk.

Creating Redundant Infrastructure

To operate without GPS, companies use multi-level systems for positioning and time synchronization.

These include:

  • Inertial navigation systems (INS): They allow short-term positioning without using signals
  • Different GNSS constellations: To make GPS less relevant
  • Sources of time synchronization on Earth: For independent timing synchronization
  • Comparison of different data sources: To identify any discrepancies
  • Manual/Procedural procedures: To provide resilience even if automated procedures fail

The goal is not to replace GPS at all, but to decrease dependence on it.

The Role of Technology Providers

With the increasing demand for resilience, companies like Safran are involved in the development of cutting-edge PNT technologies that take into account various types of information and signals and increase system autonomy in case there are no satellite systems.

The new technologies will help businesses transition from mere dependence on information to data assurance, which means that data will not only be collected but also validated.

Also, while it is necessary to work on the development of new PNT solutions, it is also important for businesses to change their operational mindset and think about all the possible ways in which GPS affects their operations and how they would react to GPS failure or degradation.

Often, the main problem is not that a business loses its GPS but rather that it is not prepared to handle the situation.

No Signal, No Excuse

The growing frequency of GPS disruption is changing expectations.

A lack of service due to signal interruption is not considered inevitable but rather represents a lack of preparation for resilience. Firms that use GPS should expect that there will be some disruption and factor it into their business practices.

In a time when signals can be blocked, spoofed, or denied, the issue is not whether GPS will be available all the time, but whether your business can continue to operate when it isn’t.

And in that environment, “no signal” is no longer an excuse, but a test of how prepared you are to operate without it.
