Real-time single-frequency precise point positioning for cars and trains
In this month’s Innovation column, we bring together, perhaps for the first time, single-frequency and real-time PPP. Our authors describe a series of experiments they have conducted on roadways and a railway achieving sub-meter horizontal positioning at a 95 percent confidence interval. Such accuracies may already be sufficient for freeway lane and railway track guidance. But we might expect even better accuracies in the future. After all, PPP is getting better all the time.

On the Edge: Tracking, Testing

One-hundred-twenty meters of test track, designed for repeatable dynamic position testing, run along the roof of the new Nottingham Geospatial Building at the University of Nottingham, UK. The figure-eight track provides an optimal controlled environment with test equipment aboard a remote-controlled, multi-sensor 7¼-inch gauge locomotive platform with a top speed of 7 kilometers per hour, a dedicated power supply, and five antenna mounts. Simulation of the track using Spirent GSS8000 hardware (GPS and Galileo) provides additional planning and testing capacity.
