Safran Electronics & Defense has introduced StarSync U4, its next-generation high-performance time server and interoperability platform. Designed for high-speed Ethernet networks, the device combines sub-nanosecond accuracy, multi-protocol interoperability, resiliency and advanced security in a compact, scalable platform, Safran said.
As digital infrastructures become increasingly distributed, precise synchronization is essential to coordinate systems across multiple sites. Financial trading, datacenters and other critical applications require timing solutions capable of supporting larger networks, higher data speeds, and continuous operation even under challenging conditions.
StarSync U4 addresses these challenges by combining White Rabbit, PTP, and NTP within a single modular platform, providing a common infrastructure for precise time and frequency distribution to bring sub-nanosecond timing to high-speed networks. The device introduces a new hardware architecture with enhanced processing capabilities and four high-speed 1G/10G SFP+ interfaces.
Its native White Rabbit technology enables deterministic sub-nanosecond synchronization over Ethernet networks, including metropolitan and wide-area infrastructures. Combined with PTP and NTP support, it also allows organizations to integrate different synchronization technologies without replacing their existing systems.
“StarSync U4 brings the proven precision of Safran’s White Rabbit implementation into a versatile time server platform, combining high-speed connectivity with seamless interoperability across different timing technologies,” explained Carlos Valenzuela, Senior Product Manager at Safran Electronics & Defense. “This enables customers to build highly accurate and reliable timing infrastructures that integrate into modern networks and scale as their requirements grow.”
What does sub-nanosecond accuracy mean in practice?
In financial trading, for instance, precise synchronization enables consistent timestamping and event correlation across trading platforms and datacenters. In network monitoring, it improves the accuracy of latency measurements, helping operators detect timing variations that would otherwise be difficult to identify. Similar benefits extend to other critical applications where precise timing and event correlation are essential.
For critical applications, accuracy alone is not enough. When a timing reference is lost or degraded, downstream clocks can drift, potentially affecting operations. Safran’s new device addresses these risks through multi-source reference monitoring, redundancy, and seamless failover mechanisms. The company also plans enhanced holdover capabilities to extend synchronization continuity during interruptions.
Advanced diagnostics and configurable alarms help operators detect potential issues and assess synchronization quality, while secure management and authentication capabilities contribute to protecting critical timing infrastructures.
Beyond financial trading and network monitoring, StarSync U4 addresses synchronization requirements in critical infrastructure, defense, aerospace and emerging quantum systems, Safran said. In a multi-site datacenter environment, for example, the device can operate as a central time server or within a distributed architecture, providing a common time reference across the network. The platform’s support for integrated GNSS capabilities further enables UTC-traceable synchronization from the reference source to end equipment.
Preparing for the next generation of timing networks
As synchronization requirements evolve, networks will need to accommodate new timing technologies, reference sources and increasingly demanding applications. The modular architecture of Safran’s latest device has been designed to support this evolution, allowing additional interfaces and enhanced capabilities to be incorporated over time. “Timing networks are becoming increasingly distributed, with a growing diversity of reference sources and synchronization technologies, and higher demands for accuracy, security and resiliency,” explained Carlos. “That’s why we designed StarSync U4 as a flexible, high-performance platform with a modular architecture that addresses today’s timing challenges and is ready to evolve with tomorrow’s requirements.”
