Iridium Communications has completed its acquisition of Aireon LLC, operator of the world’s only space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) air traffic surveillance system.
The acquisition expands Iridium’s aviation portfolio by combining Aireon’s space-based air traffic surveillance and aviation intelligence services with Iridium’s satellite communications network and positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) capabilities.
“Iridium and Aireon are fully aligned in our mission to advance the future of aviation safety,” said Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium. “What began as a vision more than a decade ago has become a foundational capability for global air traffic management, delivering real-time surveillance and operational intelligence on a global scale. Together, we will continue investing in technologies that improve aviation safety, efficiency and resiliency.”
According to the company, the combined organization will offer a platform that integrates global satellite communications, resilient PNT, space-based surveillance and aviation operational data. Iridium said the combination is intended to support real-time situational awareness and operational decision-making as global airspace becomes increasingly complex.
Aireon will continue operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of Iridium. Don Thoma will remain Aireon’s CEO and report to Desch.
Iridium announced plans to acquire the remaining 61% stake in Aireon in May. The transaction combined Aireon’s surveillance and aviation data business with Iridium’s satellite communications and PNT services as part of the company’s strategy to expand its role in aviation safety and air traffic management.
