Timing for 4G Networks

Timing for 4G Networks
Symmetricom
March 25, 2011

The TimeProvider 1500 is optimized to enable rapid deployment of 4G/LTE networks. The It is a packet-based primary reference source (PRS), providing ubiquitous and continuous access to PRS quality reference sources for operators. The TP1500 is a packet-based synchronization system that delivers a PRS-quality clock without requiring a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) antenna installation.

Until now, the only way to achieve traceable stratum-1 PRS network synchronization was to install costly GPS antennas or Cesium clocks, Symmetricom said. TimeProvider 1500 provides a stratum -1 alternative by combining the power of Symmetricom’s Rubidium oscillators and its advanced IEEE1588 soft clock algorithms to deliver stratum-1 synchronization without requiring GPS antennas or Cesium clocks.

As synchronization requirements in next generation networks (NGN) become more stringent, operators need ubiquitous and continuous access to PRS-quality reference sources. The TP1500 Packet PRS provides an attractive complement to traditional cesium or GNSS-based PRS solutions. The TP1500 combines the rubidium Quantum miniature atomic clock and Symmetricom's  PackeTime technology to deliver primary reference level synchronization in areas where GNSS coverage or antenna deployment is challenged, and supports migration from TDM to Ethernet-based networks.

The TP1500 adheres to the IEEE 1588-2008 protocol specification, and leverages the capabilities of the TimeProvider 5000 Grandmaster to provide cost-effective packet-based PRS services for the radio access network (RAN).

The TimeProvider 1500 accepts IEEE 1588-2008 Unicast/Multicast (Hybrid) messages to synchronize to a IEEE 1588-2008 grandmaster, such as theTimeProvider 5000 or SSU 2000 PTP blade and provides G.2830/G.811 compliant Stratum 1 E1/T1, 2048/1544 KHz as well as 1PPS and 10MHz sinewave outputs. The TimeProvider 1500 output performance meets/exceeds the PRS requirement as defined in Telcordia GR.2830 with a long term accuracy of1 x 10-12 (ITU-G.811, Stratum1). The outputs of the TimeProvider1500 PRS reference outputs can be fed to a variety of distributed and geographically remote Synchronization Network Elements such as the SSU 2000.

The TP1500 is designed for deployment at CO and MSC/RNC locations. Measuring 19 x 9.2 x 1.73 inches, the TP1500 fits standard communications racks and equipment cages.
