Neil Gerein from NovAtel Inc. Looks Ahead to 2020
April 8, 2010 By: Alan CameronNeil Gerein, aerospace and defense product manager, NovAtel Inc., explains STRATOS: Something That Replaces All That Other Stuff. In this case, the higher and higher levels of integration enabled by developing GNSS technology.
By the year 2020, building a GNSS chipset will be an integration effort in a very short turnaround time. The designer will pick a Viterbi decoder and connect it to a small processor core, or multiple cores, one for each channel. Although RF chip design doesn't itself necessarily follow Moore's Law, the shrinking of the other digital circuitry within will allow a smaller and smaller unit. The receiver designer will focus on better signal processing algorithms.
As the integration effort continues, Gerein envisions smaller, cooler, faster, cheaper production-level FPGAs. Small companies will be able to get high-quality chips and receivers into customers' hands at a very fast rate.
