GPS Tuner Teams with Tele Atlas and DigitalGlobe

December 10, 2009

Tele Atlas and GPS Tuner have announced an agreement under which Tele Atlas supplies digital maps and location content for Europe and North America on GPS Tuner Atlas, GPS Tuner’s off-road navigation software. The software also uses satellite imagery from DigitalGlobe, a provider of commercial, high-resolution, world imagery products and services, to further enhance the user’s visual experience.

Through the agreement, GPS Tuner Atlas leverages Tele Atlas’ digital maps for Europe and North America to provide high-quality navigation for outdoor enthusiasts such as geocachers, golfers, cyclists, and runners. “More and more mobile consumers want location information that enhances their lifestyles and leisure activities,” said Filip Neirynck, vice president of Consumer Markets, Tele Atlas. “Working together with GPS Tuner and long-time industry partner DigitalGlobe, we are pleased to extend our portfolio with a powerful, visually compelling off-road navigation solution.”

“With Tele Atlas’ advanced approach to updating maps with community input, our end users are guaranteed the freshest possible maps for all of their adventures,” said Tamas Frigyes, CEO at GPS Tuner. “Working with Tele Atlas and DigitalGlobe ensures we are offering a unique, visually rich experience for our off-road customers.”

High-resolution satellite imagery provides visual context and accuracy required to produce a life-like navigation experience, according to said Rafay Khan, DigitalGlobe senior vice president of commercial sales, adding that GPS Tuner Atlas “demonstrates features that add genuine value for the user by providing realistic off-road environments for consumers to explore.”

GPS Tuner Atlas is the latest generation of off-road navigation software developed by GPS Tuner. The new software is compatible with a wide range of mobile devices. GPS Tuner Atlas is available via Pocketland, Handango, and through other online distributors. The application is expected to be available in Western Europe, North America, and Asia, embedded in specific outdoor devices in 2010.
