TeleNav Launches Mobile Facebook Networking App

December 10, 2007

LBS provider TeleNav today took the wraps off its Whereboutz software, a social networking app for users of online social networking site Facebook, which it is also offering free through Facebook.

"We know people want an enjoyable way to stay in touch with their friends and relatives, especially around the holidays," said H.P. Jin, TeleNav president, CEO and co-founder. "Our new Whereboutz service instantly connects people no matter where they are. I can keep up with my friends and family living here and anywhere across the globe."

Whereboutz Facebook users can update their current location through the software by typing in an address and adding notes about what they are up to, according to TeleNav. An interactive map shows users where their friends are as well as comments about what they are doing. The application also includes a local search function that allows members to look up businesses nearby so they can suggest places to meet.

Additionally, if a user has not updated his or her location in a while, friends can "nudge" each other with one click for a quick way of determining a current location, TeleNav says. When nudged, users will receive a text message to let them know that their friends want to know where they are. They can also post their own locations and comments directly from their cell phones so they can keep in touch while on the go. Friends will receive a text message when others update their location.
