LBS Apps Pop up for iPhone 2.0 Launch

July 11, 2008

With the second-generation Apple iPhone — replete with GPS — hitting stores around the globe today, there are a number of location-based services (LBS) apps already available.

Among them are:

  • Wayfinder Power Search

Actually launched July 1, the Wayfinder's search application for the iPhone sent Wayfinder's servers humming with more than 100,000 search requests within 24 hours of launch, according to the company. Power Search provides more than 100 million points of interest available through a web interface. Search results include the display of pictures and in-depth descriptions of restaurants, hotels, bars, museums, and other types of location information from content partners such as Tele Atlas, Wcities, and yellow and white pages providers, the company said.

  • Loopt

Loopt has announced that its social-mapping/friend-finder service is available for free for the iPhone vial the iPhone App Store at the iTunes website. Loopt users can pinch, tap and drag an interactive map to find where their friends are and what they are doing, according to the company. Users can also instantly share photos and comments with friends and communities like Facebook and explore nearby places and events recommended by friends and popular local services such as Yelp, Loopt says.

  • Whrrl

Pelago Inc. also says that its social networking app will be available for free from the Apple App Store. "Whrrl not only lets you see where your friends are and what they're doing in real-time, it lights up your map with their activity history and combines that with deep factual data and a powerful recommendation engine to enable the user to discover cool places and events they otherwise would never have thought to try," said Jeff Holden, Pelago CEO and co-founder.

Just How Hard Is it to Get an iPhone 3G?

It is so difficult that not even Steve Wozniak can get one. Yes, even the Woz, who created the first Apple computer and co-founded the Apple Computer company along with Steve Jobs, couldn't get one ahead of time. He reportedly told an audience at the Social Networking Conference in San Francisco Thursday that he planned to stand in line all that night to get one today.
