Russia to Launch Two GLONASS Correction Relay Satellites
May 29, 2009According to an Interfax news item, the Russians will launch two multipurpose relay satellites in 2010-2011, which will carry payloads for providing GLONASS correction data. "They will provide the opportunity to receive high-precision GLONASS signals in all territory of Russia," stated N. Testoyedov, director general of Reshetnev Informational Satellite System company.
Loutch-5A will be launched in December 2010 and Loutch-5B in December 2011.
Previous Loutch (also called Luch) geostationary satellites have been used for relaying communications between the International Space Station and other space vehicles and the ground. They are analogous to the U.S. Tracking and Data Relay Satellites.
Thales Alenia Space, who is manufacturing some of components for the satellites, has indicated that the satellites will be positioned at 16-degrees west and 95-degrees east.
