Long-Awaited Dash Arrives at Amazon

March 27, 2008

Dash Navigation's connected personal navigation device (PND), the Dash Express, is now shipping and available through online retailer Amazon, the company said today.

While the company originally planned on a fourth-quarter 2007 introduction for the Dash device, it announced in December that it would begin shipping in mid to late February of this year. Dash has created a buzz in the industry, between its beta testing and market research firms declaring that the connected PND is wave of the future — and possibly the PND's defense against GPS-enabled mobile phones.

Early in 2007 Dash Navigation invited 2,000 people to test its prototype and some 53,000 people applied, according to the company. The Dash Express features both Wi-Fi and GPRS cellular capabilities for real-time connections with other Dash units, as well as with Dash servers and the Internet. It will share anonymous speed and location data with other units, which will be combined with historical traffic data — much of it culled from road-testing the device for the past year. Dash units will use all this data to compute three different routes for a destination, and reroute accordingly as conditions change and new data becomes available, the company says.

Dash Express also receives traffic information from road sensors, commercial fleets, and other sources through its partnership with traffic data supplier Inrix. The Dash Driver Network provides coverage on nearly 2 million miles of U.S. roads, and offers the only source of traffic-flow data for arterial roads in addition to highways, the company claims. It also tracks approximately 10 times more road segments than any competitive products, the company said.

The Dash PND also uses its Internet connection for updated point-of-interest data, as well as updating its own software and maps automatically. Users can also send an address via the web or e-mail directly to their Dash device, the company said.

Another notable aspect of the Dash navigation unit is the price. While Dash said in December of last year that the Express would retail for $599.99, it is available on Amazon now for $399.99. It comes with a free three-month trial period for its connected services; following that period users will have one of three options for continuing with those services: a two-year prepaid plan for the equivalent of $9.99 a month, a one-year prepaid plan for $10.99 a month, and a month-to-month plan at $12.99 a month. There are no additional cellular or Wi-Fi charges. The Express can still be used as a PND without the subscription service, the company said.
