July 29, 2011

Russian mobile company MTS has launched a GLONASS smartphone, called MTS Glonass 945, which the company states is the first mobile handset supporting GLONASS as well as GPS.

The MTS Glonass 945 is based on Google’s Android 2.2 operating system, the Russian mobile operator said. The 3G device will receive signals from U.S. GPS and Glonass simultaneously, which could help users navigate through extreme topography that could block the transmissions of some satellites, MTS said. The handset will work not only on MTS's network but also with other operators.

The smartphone is available at MTS’ monobrand stores in Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as at the company’s online store. The smartphone costs 10,990 rubles at MTS’ online store, or about $388 U.S.
