Skyhook Location Engine Powers Kindle Transit App
January 16, 2012 By: Janice PartykaHopStop, a provider of transit routing, has integrated Skyhook's Location Engine into its Kindle Fire app to provide location services. The current version of the Kindle Fire does not provide any location services natively. Android apps that use Skyhook will automatically work on the Kindle Fire without changes.
HopStop is a location-based service that provides door-to-door biking, mass transit, taxi and walking directions in 68 major metropolitan markets (and more than 200 cities) throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Russia. Skyhook is a provider of location positioning, context and intelligence. In 2003, Skyhook pioneered the development of the Wi-Fi Positioning System to provide location results in urban areas. Today, Skyhook's Core Engine provides positioning to consumer mobile devices and applications.
“Kindle Fire has been an extremely popular device since its release and continues to grow,” said Ted Morgan, founder and CEO of Skyhook. “While the native platform provides no way for location-based apps to perform their core functionalities, Skyhook is happy to provide our fast and reliable location for apps like HopStop and MapQuest, which require it.”
