Persistent Systems Acquires Openwave's Mobile Location-Based Business
February 3, 2012Persistent Systems, an outsourced software product development (OPD) service provider, has announced that it has, through its U.S. subsidiary, acquired the location business from Openwave Systems Inc. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
“You can write all the apps you want, however, nothing is going to accurately pinpoint the location of a mobile phone without carrier-grade LBS software," Hari Haran, president of Persistent Systems, said. "We have acquired the missing link in LBS for enterprises and we are connecting the dots through software. Persistent Systems owns the LBS dot.”
With Persistent Systems acquiring Openwave’s Mobile Location-Based business, the company is positioned to offer enterprises carrier-grade location-based services (LBS). Persistent has acquired technology from Openwave — middleware software that sits in the carrier network. This is the LBS that accurately tracks the location of a phone for e911 and commercial tracking, and through this acquisition, Persistent will allow enterprises to tap into this LBS. Carriers previously could not open this up to enterprises as they only lease the software, and OEMs that develop and lease the software to carriers have no relationships with the enterprise community. Persistent Systems is now allowing the carrier to be the channel to the enterprise, and bring LBS alive for enterprises, bridging the LBS ecosystem together through software, the company said.
“We are excited to acquire Openwave’s location business,” said Anand Deshpande, chairman, managing director and CEO of Persistent Systems. “Persistent has a decade long relationship with Openwave that has culminated in this transaction. We welcome the Openwave Location team to the Persistent family.”
