CGSIC: Public Notice Concerning GPS Satellite IIR-20M SVN-49

March 26, 2010

The U.S. Government announced it is providing notice that it is actively considering several mitigation options prior to changing the health status of Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite IIR-20M (SVN-49) from unhealthy to healthy.

According to the announcement by the CGSIC (Civil GPS Service Interface Committee) Executive Secretariat Rick Hamilton, the potential mitigations are each designed to reduce the impact of the unique nature of the SVN 49 signal to a portion of the user segment. The Air Force GPS Wing is actively seeking input from the public with regard to concerns or adverse impacts that may affect civil community GPS user equipment.  A copy of the Register notice is posted on the NAVCEN website along with a presentation briefing provided by the GPS Wing describing the satellite's current status and proposed options for setting the satellite healthy at some point in the future (see News and Notices on the home page).  Please refer to instructions within the Federal Register Notice to voice your concerns or provide input.
